S18E4: Getting Started ~ I Can Do What With Podcasting???

Podcasting, a useful endeavour in itself, provides many opportunities outside of the public facing RSS feed. In this post I’ll delve into a few of those options.

Geolocated Travel Audio Services

One avenue is the development of geolocated travel audio services. Podcasters, accustomed to crafting engaging narratives and capturing high-quality audio, are uniquely positioned to create immersive audio tours.

This works by using a geolocation pin paired with an audio file. There are various services who provide hosting for these specific use cases: VoiceMap, GuideAlong and GeoTourist. Basically you record the audio linked to the location and these services host the audio and assist with sales for a cut of those sales.

By integrating GPS technology, a podcaster,  these guides trigger audio segments as users move through designated areas, offering context and stories that enrich the travel experience. There really is no limit to these audio “packets”. From fully scripted historical reenactments to lightly written descriptions the choice is yours. I would suggest writing the scripts for a specific market segment, Retirees, young families or other demographic options would make sense.

Similarly, a nature-focused podcaster could produce immersive audio walks, highlighting local flora, fauna and geological features. These services cater to a growing demand for experiential travel, offering a more personalized and engaging alternative to traditional guided tours. Podcasters, already skilled in audio editing and storytelling, can create compelling narratives that bring locations to life.

The podcaster’s established audience may be a ready-made market for these services. Travel agencies, tourism boards and local businesses could partner with podcasters to offer these audio experiences, creating mutually beneficial revenue streams. The flexibility of audio production allows for easy updates and adaptations, ensuring your travel content remains relevant and engaging. By leveraging your podcasting skills, you can diversify their income, transforming your passion for audio into a sustainable business model within the travel and tourism sector.

Sound Effects Libraries

Podcasting naturally cultivates a keen ear for sound, making the creation of a sound effects library a logical and possibly lucrative income stream. Podcasters, from those involved in narrative or fiction-based shows to some YuoTubers to radio producers, often require a diverse range of sound effects, from subtle ambient noises to dramatic sonic impacts. Your experience, combined with your audio editing skills, positions you perfectly to build and monetize such a library.

A well-curated sound effects library can cater to a broad audience, including fellow podcasters, filmmakers, video game developers and even advertisers. The demand for authentic and high-fidelity sound effects is consistently high, creating a relatively sustainable market. You will need to research further if this is the direction you’d like to go. You can differentiate your library by specializing in niche categories, such as specific environmental sounds, historical recreations or unique foley recordings.

Furthermore, the digital nature of audio allows for easy distribution and monetization. You can offer your sound effects library through online platforms, subscription services or individual sales. The ability to create and manage digital assets provides a flexible and scalable income stream, allowing you to leverage their existing skills and equipment developed through podcasting to generate revenue beyond your show. Your ability to capture and manipulate sound is a valuable asset, transforming for use in other fields should never be underestimated.

Private Training Feeds

As a podcaster you are exceptionally well-equipped to provide private podcasting services for corporate training. Here’s how it works:

Companies are increasingly aware the use of audio for internal communication and training is an efficient option for onboarding, training and audio newsletters. You, with your expertise in audio production, narrative storytelling and audience engagement, fill this niche perfectly. You can create bespoke, private podcast feeds tailored to a company’s specific needs.

Imagine a large corporation needing to onboard new employees across multiple locations. Instead of costly in-person training sessions, you could create a series of engaging audio modules covering company policies, product information and best practices. These modules could be delivered via a private podcast feed, accessible only to authorized employees. Obvious really but under utilised, I would argue.

As a podcaster you bring several advantages to this space:

  • Engaging Content: You know how to craft compelling audio narratives holding listeners’ attention, making training more effective.
  • Accessibility: Audio allows employees to learn on the go, during commutes or while performing other tasks.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to traditional training methods, private podcasting can significantly reduce expenses.
  • Scalability: Audio content can be easily updated and distributed to a large number of employees simultaneously.
  • Skill Transfer: You can use your existing equipment, editing software and hosting platforms to create and manage these private feeds.

By leveraging their podcasting skills, creators can tap into the growing corporate training market, providing a valuable and in-demand service.

Offering Voiceover and Narration Services

One of the most valuable and transferable skills available through podcasting is the ability to offer professional voiceover and narration services. Podcasting is a medium that relies entirely on the voice to tell stories, convey information and connect with audiences. Through this work, you’ll develop a strong and adaptable vocal presence, which is an asset for projects that require voiceover and narration across a wide range of formats and industries.

Podcasting gives you extensive experience behind the microphone. Over time, you learn how to use vocal tone, pacing, inflection and emphasis to communicate messages effectively. Whether narrating a story, conducting interviews or explaining complex topics, podcasting refines your ability to speak clearly, expressively and with authenticity. These are core elements of high-quality voiceover work.

Moreover, podcasting teaches the importance of consistency, meeting deadlines and collaborating with others—whether that’s coordinating with guests, editors or production teams. This level of professionalism and attention to detail transfers fairly easily into voiceover work.

You see you have at least four options:

  • Geolocated travel guides
  • Sound effects Library
  • Private training feeds
  • Voice Over Services
